Harsh environments
Designing applications for extreme conditions.
How do you ensure that environmental factors do not affect electronics and moving components?
Machines operating in harsh environments endure significant challenges due to exposure to shocks, moisture, dust, and extreme temperatures. Whether a machine is suitable for a harsh environment depends on the components you select. The motors, drives, controllers, linear actuators, and mechanical transmissions used must be qualified, verified, and tested according to the strictest environmental, EMC, and safety standards, ensuring they can withstand extreme conditions.

What do we mean by 'extreme conditions'?
In a harsh environment, you may encounter factors such as:
- High and low temperatures, ranging from -40°C to +70°C.
- Thermal shocks, where components are subjected to extreme heating or cooling in a short period.
- Significant pressure differences due to altitude and depth variations.
- High relative humidity, up to 95% non-condensing at 25°C, and up to 90% non-condensing at 42°C.
- Intense vibrations and strong mechanical shocks.
Additionally, chemical gases, fine dust, water, salt, electromagnetic interference, and radioactivity can also affect the functioning of your machine.
Five key considerations for drive and control systems
It is advisable to consider environmental factors early in the development process and to plan for worst-case scenarios. What extremes will your system face in a harsh environment? This will determine the choice of materials and the sealing of components. Below are five critical factors that contribute to the robustness of a machine:
- Choosing the right materials
- Protective coatings
- Dust and waterproof sealing
- Shock resistance
- Ease of maintenance
