Vaxtractor automates syringe filling
Automating the syringe filling process to reduce workload, cut costs, and alleviate physical strain on healthcare workers.
What is Vaxtractor?
Large-scale vaccination campaigns involve complex logistical processes. In addition to administering injections, healthcare workers must also fill syringes—a time-consuming and costly task that requires extreme precision. Atlas provides a solution with the Vaxtractor, a machine capable of filling 250 syringes per hour with exceptional accuracy.
Wilfred Weijers of Atlas developed the Vaxtractor to automate this process. The goal is to ease workload, reduce costs, and prevent physical strain among healthcare workers.
Project Outcome
In collaboration with Eltrex Motion, the Vaxtractor was equipped with Moons stepper motors, spindles, linear guides, and a touchscreen with a human-machine interface (HMI). Eltrex also supplied PBC Linear slide bearings for maintenance-free operation and a PLC system for stable process control. The machine includes a built-in scanner for traceability, recording batch numbers, quantities, dates, and times.
Eltrex Motion contributed drive and positioning technology, motors, and innovative solutions such as the automatic removal of syringe caps.

From concept to reality
The Vaxtractor is now successfully in use at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. It ensures precise dosing, maintains a sterile process, and reduces the risk of needlestick injuries.
Healthcare workers experience less fatigue and physical discomfort as they no longer need to fill syringes manually. Additionally, the machine reduces costs by lowering staffing requirements.
Atlas about Eltrex Motion
‘By involving the right people at an early stage, you can turn a brilliant idea into a working product,’ says Wilfred Weijers, owner of Atlas. In close collaboration with Eltrex Motion and other partners, he developed the Vaxtractor.

Public-Private Collaboration
‘We had the opportunity to observe operations at a large-scale vaccination site run by GGD Brabant-Zuidoost and learned a great deal from healthcare workers manually filling syringes,’ Weijers explains. ‘Their input was crucial in making the design even more user-friendly.’
For the machine’s production, Atlas partnered with technology developer and manufacturer Demcon. Eltrex Motion provided the drive and positioning technology required for the highly precise filling of syringes.
