Munckhof electrifies fruit harvesting machines
Electric motors make the machines easier to maintain, reduce noise levels, and improve operator comfort.
Who is Munckhof?
Founded in 1884, Munckhof has become a trusted name among growers of apples, pears, cherries, olives, and other fruits. Their crate fillers, spraying systems, and harvesting machines are renowned for their reliability.
In 2018, the company was acquired, and the new Munckhof has since focused on automation, GPS, and data management. These innovations help fruit growers increase yields, optimise product quality, and reduce costs.
Project Outcome
To stay ahead of the competition, Munckhof continuously innovates its machinery. In partnership with Eltrex Motion, the company explored electrification possibilities. The project began with the electrification of the Pluk-O-Trak’s movable conveyor belts, which were already powered by electric motors. The focus then shifted to the main conveyor and filler, which were originally driven by combustion engines. The new electric motors make the machine easier to maintain while reducing noise levels and improving operator comfort.

From machine builder to tech innovator
Traditional combustion engines powering Munckhof’s machines come with drawbacks, such as vibrations and exhaust emissions, which can cause discomfort for pickers and potential maintenance issues. Munckhof collaborated with Eltrex to find an alternative. 'In terms of power, reliability, and availability, Bühler motors proved to be the best choice for this application,' says Alwin Wierks, Account Manager at Eltrex Motion. 'Thorough testing was essential to gain a clear understanding of factors such as motor temperature fluctuations during operation.'
Munckhof about Eltrex Motion
'Eltrex is our technical sparring partner,' says Verhaegh. When Munckhof first connected with Eltrex, they had already selected an electric motor for the main conveyor and filler. 'But the motor had an unsuitable bearing, which caused more noise than a petrol engine—clearly not the intended outcome. Eltrex helped us find a better alternative.'

Electrifying the Pluk-O-Trak
'The Pluk-O-Trak currently runs on a petrol engine with a variomatic transmission, allowing it to move seamlessly forward and backward at the same speed. We’re now exploring the possibility of converting this system to electric for customers who prefer that option,' says Verhaegh. Machines previously equipped with the older, noisier electric motor have now been upgraded with a Bühler motor. Based on performance results, Munckhof is planning the next steps for further electrification.
